Furnaces heat the air in your home with either electricity or gas. Depending on the type of furnace you choose, the efficiency of the system can be very high. Electric furnaces pass air over an electric strip to produce heat. This process is very inefficient; therefore, electric furnaces are usually on the low end of the efficiency scale.

Gas furnaces, on the other hand, pass air over a radiator-like heat exchanger to produce heat. Burning the gas inside the heat exchanger produces a more efficient process compared to electric furnaces. Gas furnaces can be one of the more comfortable sources of heat because of the temperature of the air supplied at the registers.

As an added bonus, Northwest Natural Gas offers a rebate for purchasing any gas furnace with a 90% efficiency rating or higher.
